As early as 1673 an Indian village was the site of what is now known as Port Hope. Sulphician Missionaries of Montreal served the community in its spiritual needs. Between 1800 and 1840 Irish sailors and French Canadian lumber jacks also too residence in the area, and the spiritual care for immigrants and tradesmen was now provided by the missionaries of Kingston.
